Sarah Giffen Carr
Co-Executive Director of Conservation
(Sarah is supporting Midcoast Conservancy on a part-time basis this summer, and starting full-time on September 3. )
As Co-Executive Director of Conservation, Sarah is a member of our leadership team and is responsible for Midcoast Conservancy's conservation programs, including developing and implementing strategic priorities to conserve, steward and restore land and water in midcoast Maine. Before joining Midcoast Conservancy, Sarah worked for a range of organizations from non-profits to government. Her work experience has been focused on environmental issues and land use planning. From her work at McGill University, the Appalachian Mountain Club, the U.S. Geological Survey, Maine Land Use Planning Commission as well as her volunteer work at the Kennebec Land Trust and Maine Audubon, she has extensive experience in natural resource management, organizational management and relationship building.
A Maine native, Sarah grew up hiking most weekends on trails from the coast to the North Woods, hauling firewood to improve her family's 20-acre woodlot, and going on extended canoe trips on the Allagash and St John Rivers. She learned to white water paddle from her father on the Sheepscot River as soon as she was old enough to hold a paddle. The connection to the outdoors that ran throughout her childhood planted the seeds of a passion for environmental conservation. She believes that contributing to the conservation of special natural places enriches our lives individually and collectively, contributes to vital rural communities and economies and is part of our environmental responsibility.
Sarah holds a degree in both Environmental Science and Geography from McGill University in Montreal. She lives in Brunswick with her family on a small farm with an old horse, some chickens and a collection of apple trees that might just bear fruit this year.
