We often turn to birds to show us when spring is in the air, but did you know that amphibians sing just as loudly and embark on their own epic migrations? As nighttime temperatures rise above freezing, salamanders, frogs, newts, and toads emerge from their winter burrows and journey in great numbers to their breeding grounds. This event, called “Big Night,” is a mass migration that occurs during warm, rainy nights from late March to early May. Join us for a daytime exploration of the amphibians that are waking up in our own backyards, their fascinating and varied lifestyles, and the awesome journeys they embark on.
We will meet at the trailhead of Hidden Valley Nature Center at 9am, then complete a gentle hike that will bring us past vernal pools and wetlands where we will observe and learn about the amphibians that rely on them.
This event will happen rain or shine. In fact, if it rains we will likely see a greater number and diversity of amphibians! However in the case of severe weather like thunderstorms, this event will be postponed to April 16th.
Registration is required: Free for Midcoast Conservancy members, $5 for non-members.
