Lichens Walk

  • Whitefield Salmon Preserve Howe Road Whitefield, ME, 04353 United States (map)

Lichens are AMAZING! They cover 7% of the earth’s surface; they are a symbiosis between mutual parasites; there are more than 500 kinds in our area; and they are beautiful! Come for a walk with lichen enthusiast, Master Naturalist, and Midcoast Conservancy Deputy Director Air Rhodes to take a close look at the miniscule, marvelous world of lichens.

This walk will be a slow walk over a short distance (total ~0.5 miles), focused on looking at many details along the way, so is accessible to anyone able to walk slowly over slightly uneven terrain with exposed roots. Those who can bend over / kneel down will be able to explore low-down lichens, but there will be many others at eye height to see as well. People of all ages are welcome, so long as they are patient with the pace.
