Join us for a morning adventure on the water at Hidden Valley Nature Center!
Join us for a morning of learning and exploration on Little Dyer Pond. Walk the easy mile down to the dock where our fleet of canoes lay waiting. Get fitted with a paddle and PFD from our boat shed before pairing up with a paddling partner. Before hitting the water our trained instructors will teach you the basics of canoe paddling, including the parts of a boat, strokes for steering, and the best way to enter and launch your boat. Once on the water, practice the strokes you’ve learned for steering and powering the canoe. Once everyone is comfortable guiding their boats, the group will explore the pond, checking out beaver activity, and the marshy edges where birds nest.
Everyone is welcome, whether you’ve been paddling for years or you’ve never been in a boat! Children mature enough and interested in learning to paddle are welcome to join with a parent or adult.
All materials needed for paddling will be supplied. Please wear quick dry clothes, shoes you don’t mind getting wet, and a hat for bugs and sun. Don’t forget your bug repellent, sunscreen, water and a snack. Program meets in front of the Welcome Center.
