River History Paddle on the Sheepscot River

  • Wiscasset Town Dock 1 Water Street Wiscasset, ME, 04578 United States (map)

Join us on June 23rd for a river history paddle on the Sheepscot River! Cosponsored by Midcoast Conservancy and the Lincoln County Historical Association (LCHA) this event will explore the interwoven human and natural history of the river. The paddle will be led by Melissa Cote, the Sheepscot River Watershed Manager for Midcoast Conservancy, and Scot McFarlane, a river historian and board member of LCHA.

A river rich in history and life, paddlers will learn about the history of the Sheepscot and the people who depend upon it. The tour will discuss current restoration efforts and how the river’s past shapes those projects. By talking about this history on the water, the tour will highlight a different perspective for thinking about the Sheepscot, and also help people to develop a framework to think about the importance of other rivers in their life too.

Participants must provide their own canoes/kayaks and a personal flotation device (PFD). Previous paddling experience is required to be able to maintain a reasonable pace so that all paddlers can stick together and participate in the discussion. Keep in mind, we will be paddling in a tidal environment, initially paddling against the incoming tide on the outbound trip and paddling with the tide on the return trip.  Each individual paddler is responsible for their own safety and a liability waiver must be signed in order to participate in the paddle.
